5 Everyday cleaning items that are easy to make (And work great!)

5 Everyday cleaning items that are easy to make (And work great!)

1. Make your own gel hand sanitizer!

1 1/2 ounces pure aloe vera (not the green stuff)

3 teaspoons rubbing alcohol

1 teaspoon vitamin e oil

5 drops essential oil – lemon and lavender are my favorites in this recipe

-Dispense ingredients directly in a small container with a lid.  Shake liberally to mix all ingredients thoroughly.  If you want your gel to be slightly thinner in consistency, add a little more rubbing alcohol, up to one teaspoon. And then it’s ready for use! Just remember to shake it before use!

2. Peppermint Daily Shower Cleaner Spray

1/2 cup vodka (you can use rubbing alcohol but it seems the vodka works better in this recipe)

1 cup water

10 drops peppermint essential oil

glass spray bottle

-Mix and store in a spray bottle.  Spray shower after use.  No rinsing necessary.  Other good tip: Use a squeegee at the end of your shower to remove excess water and to prevent water spots.

3. Foaming Hand Soap

foaming soap dispenser(s) – Easy to find or reuse one!

1-2 tablespoons castile soap (many different scents to choose from!) – I use 2 tablespoons for 8 ounces of water (the amount just depends on how foamy you want your soap to be)

8 ounces of water (or whatever size your foamer is) – use distilled water if you can, but tap water works just as good

measuring spoons

-Funnel the measured amount of castile soap into the bottle then pour water over it. Shake to mix it up and you’re done. You can also add 10-20 drops of essential oils inside to add more scents.

4.  Disinfecting Spray Cleaner

1 1/4 cups water

1/4 cup white vinegar

1/4 cup vodka (excellent germ-killing properties – you can substitute rubbing alcohol, but it will have a more medicinal scent)

15 drops essential oil – peppermint + lemon OR lavender + lemon are great in this recipe

glass spray bottle

 -Mix all ingredients together

5. Marble and Granite top Cleaner

3 tablespoons rubbing alcohol

1 1/2 cups water

1 teaspoon castile or dish soap (if you want your spray to smell like your dish soap, use that)

-Combine ingredients, close spray bottle, shake, and CLEAN!

It’s that time again!  There are hundreds of missed school days every year because of germs and sicknesses that could’ve been avoided. Here are some simple tips to help keep your kids a little bit cleaner and healthier every day.

  • Use a disinfectant wipe on high-touch points every day when your child comes home from school. You can do this right when they’re taking everything out of their backpack to do their homework. Wipe down zipper and straps of their backpack, binders, pencils and other items they are using all day.
  • Give your child hand sanitizer for their backpack and also have extra bottles of it everywhere you can. Encourage the use at all times possible.
  • Teach your child to cough or sneeze into the crook of their arm if they don’t have a tissue available. This way the germs are not “caught” in their hands and spread to surfaces and other children by their hands. Make sure you explain to them how important it is not to spread germs and diseases.
  • Teach your child to keep their hands away from their face and mouth. Hands are too often carrying germs. Eyes, nose, and mouth are the entry points for germs to get into our body and make us sick.
  • Remind your child not to share water bottles or chapstick with other children. Anything that goes in your mouth shouldn’t be shared.

Above all else, just remember the most important way to keep your child healthy is a balanced diet, exercise and sleep. These are by far the most important things in a child’s life. Also, a daily multivitamin! ?

Cleaning Bathroom Rugs

Cleaning Bathroom Rugs

It’s so easy for us to forget about things that are under our feet on a daily basis, sometimes life is too busy to worry about those things..

But—we all need to stop and realize how many germs are hiding in our bathrooms.

Learn how often you should be cleaning bathroom rugs, as well as how to clean bathmats of varying types.

How Often Should You Wash Bathroom Rugs?

The rugs in your bathroom are the #1 go-to place for mildew, bacteria and even fungi. This is because of the warmth and moisture. Because of this you should wash your bathroom rugs regularly.

The frequency with which you launder your rugs really depends on your household. If you have kids who play a lot of sports or a bathmat that sees so much use it never dries, you’ll want to wash it on a weekly basis. On the other hand, if your home consists of one or two people who shower once a day, you can space out cleanings every two to three weeks.

The basics of washing the rugs

Before washing your bathroom rugs, always check the care tags to make sure you’re not supposed to use any specific cleaning products or washer and dryer settings.

First things, first—take them outside and shake them out! Additionally, if your bathroom rugs have plastic or rubber backing, wipe that off with a dry microfiber cloth first.

Cleaning Microfiber and Chenille Bathmats

–Place your mats in the washer with a gentle laundry detergent. Make sure you don’t overload your washing machine.

–Wash on the cold setting.

–Tumble dry on the lowest heat setting. Alternatively, you can hang your mats outside to dry.
Note: If you’re using the dryer, be certain not to mix your microfiber or chenille bathroom rugs with other fabrics, especially towels. If these bathroom rugs pick up lint, they won’t dry as quickly.

Cleaning Plastic- or Rubber-Backed Bathmats

Plastic and rubber-backed bathmats are standard in many homes and they’re made of a wide array of materials, from cotton to nylon, so remember to check care tags!

–Check the undersides of your mats to see if the backing is cracked or peeling. If so, it may be time to get a new mat as these little pieces can come off in the washer or dryer, causing clogs in or damage to your appliances.

–Place mats in the washer, taking care not to overload your machine. Wash your bathroom rugs on the cold setting with a gentle laundry detergent.

–Hang your mats outside to dry or tumble dry on the lowest setting. You should never use heat when drying plastic- or rubber-backed bathmats because it can cause the backing to crack or even melt.
That’s all there is to it when it comes to learning how to clean bathroom rugs. Your feet will thank you for taking the time to wash bathmats regularly.

Letting Your Child Help Clean Builds Confidence

Letting Your Child  Help Clean Builds Confidence

A few of you out there may have young children that make a huge mess around the house.  Although this might be a daily occurrence, and causes stress, it can also be a learning opportunity for your child, and a chance for them to develop responsibility.  Here at Tri Maids Reno, we are happy to be your Reno home cleaners, but we also want your children to build responsibility and a sense of teamwork.

Here are Eight Ways your young son or daughter can help out around the house:

Helping stack groceries

Children love helping put away the groceries after a long trip to the grocery store.  They like seeing the complete process from store shelf to your shelf, as it completes a story in their day.

Or maybe you come home after a long day carrying in bags.  They want to know what’s in them and usually they just slow you down.  Instead of this, teach them to stack groceries with you!  Give them all the stuff on the lower shelves of the pantry.

Water plants

Kids have a natural affinity for water.  They love houses, and spray bottles.  They will have an absolute joyous day if you acccidentally leave them alone with a water house or spray bottle!

Why not turn that natural curiosity into a work & responsibility opportunity?  Let them water plants with you!  They will absolutely love it, and you may catch them reminding you when you forget.

Cleaning up their toys

When children make a mess, it is important for them to bear a bit of the responsibility of cleaning up.  Try doing the “clean up song” after each play session and their job is to put away all the toys they took out.

Open mail

Kids love opening mail after the long (for them it’s long) visit to the mailbox.  Let them open your letters, and let them help you open boxes.  They love opening things because there are always surprises inside!

Cleaning up shoes

You know how hard it is for you to bend over to line up those shoes near the door?  No problem for a toddler!  They are down there already, mine as well put them to work!

Laundry start

If you have children, you know they love the laundry start ritual.  They get to pour thigns inw, and watch the water flow, and push the start button………..  It’s a magical first step into getting them to like doing chores.

Laundry fold

Although they may be slow, and do the worst folding in the history of folding, it is important for kids to learn to help out around the house.  They learn this by working WITH you, while doing a potentially boring task.

Keeping your home clean in between visits from Tri Maids Reno

Keeping your home clean in between visits from Tri Maids Reno

Take your shoes off before entering your home

The biggest dirt problem we see on our Reno home floors are brought in by footwear.  The Japanese are some of the cleanest people in the world, and they do not allow you to walk inside their home with your shoes on.

We totally stand behind this, and we practice this in our homes as well 🙂

Wipe down as you cook

Not sure if you’ve noticed, but if you clean while you cook, it feels like you are cleaning less overall.  Maybe it’s true, maybe it’s not.  One thing we do know is that when you get kitchen splatter, from a pain or bowl, the longer the splatter sits, the harder it is to clean.

Even after you clean it, there might still be residue left for Tri Maids to come clean!  So always try to clean as you go, and it makes splatter removal easier.

Seal off unused rooms

We’re sure you have some rooms in your home that don’t get used all the time.  The guest room is a perfect example.  By leaving the door open to this room, you are letting dust fly in and settle.

This is completely pointless, and we’re here to tell you that although we love your business, this is a waste of your money!

So do yourself a favor and keep doors & windows closed to unused rooms.  You can still air them out once in awhile, but don’t leave it open too long.

Control your pet!

Pet fur is the worst!  It gets into everything, and you will even find it in your AC vent.  Do yourself (and your dog) a favor and brush them regularly outside.

This will prevent most of the fur-ocious mess from getting inside the home.

Keep clutter in the garage

Clutter begets clutter.  Every Reno maid knows this.  People tend to feel okay about cluttering up areas that are already in clutter.  We don’t know why this is, but it’s true.  So keep all your clutter in the garage instead.

You know the hardest thing to clean in your bathroom?  It’s those solid shower glass doors!  The hard water stains can be quite hard to remove.  You can save yourself a lot of pain by using a squeegee after any shower.  It only takes about 20 seconds, and it saves you (and us) a world of time in cleaning your bathroom.

Keep top surfaces bare

Top surfaces gather dust like no other part of the home.  Because of this, we recommend that you keep them as bare as possible.  This will allow you to wipe them down frequently and easily.

Cleaning a Vacation Rental in Reno

Cleaning a Vacation Rental in Reno

One of the biggest requests we get is for people to clean their vacation rental in Reno.  Reno has a few homes that are vacant for most of the year.  Usually these are homeowners from across state lines that decided to either invest in Reno, or they use it as a getaway.  They need to hire maids in Reno to ensure that there home is clean.

Of course these homeowners want to protect their investment so they call us in to make sure that their homes are nice & tidy all year long!   We also will check up on the property for them to make sure that all is in order and no breakins, water leaks, or other urgent issues have arisen.

Treat the Property Like Your Own

The most important thing is to treat the property as if it were our home.  That means in the course of maid services, that if we see something wrong, we report it immediately to the homeowner.  This can save them LOTS of money, especially if a water leak occurs.  The leak, left untreated, could turn to mold, and cost the homeowner tens of thousands of dollars to repair.

So not only do we clean the house, but we make sure to check that there are no leaks or other issues.

Be Available

Availability is one of the most critical determinants for a vacation rental homeowner.  They are only there for a few times out of the year, and they want to take extra care that the home is ready for them when they arrive.  Some of our clients even call up last minute asking us to clean it in a jiffy!

We always try to be available when they need us to ensure that the home is ready for their vacation escape.

Fast & Current Communication

Many times our clients are out of state, and they need responses to come fast and current. Part of providing excellent customer service is to make sure we are prompt in replies, and proactive in suggestions or concerns.

This ensures that the client always feels that their home is in good hands.

How to Keep Your Carpets Clean: Maintenance Tips

Although hardwood and laminate flooring has recently taken over the flooring fad among homeowners, carpets in Reno are still a highly favored flooring material. There are a lot of really beneficial advantages of carpets such as the wide variety of colors, sizes, styles and texture it has in the market. But while there are still carpets at home, fear of doing the wrong maintenance work is still the number one fear of most potential buyers. Most Reno maid cleaning services believe that if you carpet is regularly taken care of, it will last a long while.

Stain Resistant Carpets And More Maintenance Tricks

It can greatly help homeowners to buy stain resistant carpets to avoid having to brush off and wash heavy stains and dirt. How Stuff Works has actually written a whole article about it. They may be too good to be true and a bit costly for most, but it is something your money will definitely give you good value for. It is also wise to avoid installing carpets in Reno in areas in your home that is expected to have heavy and constant foot traffic throughout the day. Carpets are ultimately great in bedrooms because it gives it a warm and comfortable ambiance while not enduring heavy traffic.

Avoid it in front of doors or entries where people are expected to come and go. It also helps to look for colored carpets that can hide stains and Houzz has published an inspiring article about these colors. Homeowners with kids will definitely have to deal with stains every single day if they have carpets at home but they can still achieve their dreams of a carpeted home by buying shades of off-white or dark-colored carpet flooring. These colors mask stains and at the same time still primps and beautifies your space.

One Stop 4 Flooring Is A Highly-Recommended Flooring Store

Of course, hiring and paying for a professional carpet cleaner is the best advice anyone can give. But if you have the time and think you can do the job on your own, then it is best to research more on the subject and list down more tips and tricks in proper care.
